Disadvantages of Mechanical Presses in Roll Forming - Part 4

October 7, 2025 | by Formtek

In this series on our blog, we'll go through each press type one by one and discuss their features, advantages, and disadvantages and how all those elements make them the right choice for certain applications. In this post, we'll focus on the advantages of hydraulic presses in particular roll forming applications and operations.

Potential Disadvantages of Mechanical Presses

Mechanical presses offer significant advantages, including high precision and repeatability, ensuring consistent quality in mass production. They are also highly efficient, capable of rapid cycling, which boosts productivity while reducing production costs. Additionally, their robust design allows them to handle a wide range of materials and thicknesses, making them versatile for various manufacturing applications.

However, there are some factors that may serve as disadvantages of using mechanical presses in certain applications, including the following.

  • Initial Cost: Higher initial cost compared to air presses.

  • Accuracy: Hard to stop at top dead center, resulting in less accuracy.

  • Complexity: More complex mechanical components can mean higher maintenance requirements.

  • Tonnage Limitations: Limited tonnage when the ram is more than ½ inch off the bottom of the stroke.

  • Flexibility: Less flexible in terms of stroke length and force adjustment compared to hydraulic presses.

While mechanical presses are valued in mass production operations for their high precision and repeatability, manufacturers should consider the potential drawbacks of these machines to ensure the chosen press type aligns with their specific roll forming needs and production goals.

In some operations and configurations, a different type of press might be more efficient or provide added benefits. Be sure to visit our other guides to mechanical presses and air presses to learn which type of press might be best for your roll forming operation.
